Cardiology

Cardiology is a full time clinical specialty service within the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University. Two Board Certified faculty members share equal clinical appointments for coverage of the cardiology service, as well as a full time resident in cardiology. A full time echocardiographer is also available. Each week, the cardiology service sees scheduled clinical appointments of small and large animals with cardiac problems. In addition, the service is available for internal referral of small animal cardiac cases from other services including the night-emergency and triage services. The cardiology service provides echocardiography, electrocardiography, and cardiac consultation services for small, large, and exotic animals.
In addition to the standard cardiology services mentioned above, specialty activities such as interventional cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery are performed on the cardiology service. Interventional cardiac procedures include diagnostic cardiac catheterization, balloon valvuloplasty, electrophysiological studies/procedures, and other catheter-based interventional procedures. The cardiothoracic surgery program includes open-heart surgery.
