Equine Critical Care Faculty
Dr. Diana M. Hassel
Dr. Diana Hassel joined the faculty at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine in November of 2004 as an assistant professor in Equine Emergency Surgery & Critical Care. She obtained her DVM at the University of California, Davis, completed an internship in Large Animal Medicine & Surgery at Washington State University, and returned to UC Davis for completion of her residency in equine surgery. Dr. Hassel is a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. She stayed on as an emergency equine surgeon at UC Davis from 1997 through 2004, and during that time completed a PhD in Comparative Pathology.
Dr. Hassel's research efforts have primarily been associated with the study of equine gastrointestinal disease, with a special emphasis on equine enterolithiasis. With her extensive background in colic surgery, she has a strong interest in the area of equine emergency medicine and critical care. Her current position at CSU reflects this and she has recently developed our new equine emergency and critical care service. Her current research efforts are directed towards management of infectious gastrointestinal diseases and optimizing care of the critically ill patient. Dr. Hassel is a fellow of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.
Dr. Eileen Hackett
Dr. Hackett is an assistant professor of equine surgery and critical care at Colorado State University (CSU), College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, in Fort Collins, Colorado. Dr. Hackett grew up in Southern Illinois, a graduate 'A' pony clubber and member of the Boskydell Pony Club.
She began her veterinary training at the University of Illinois and then went on to do an Equine Internship at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. She received further training in large animal surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, Kennett Square, PA. She obtained board certification by examination from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) in 2003.
Dr. Hackett has served as a clinician in the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at CSU since 2002. She is currently continuing her specialty in large animal critical care.
