About the Hospital

CSU equine veterinarians, students, and staff make a difference in the lives of horses and their owners. View the success stories of five recent clients.

The Equine Hospital at Colorado State University is a state-of-art facility that can provide horse owners with any and all types of care for their horses. These services range from routine vaccinations and preventative health care to complicated surgical procedures such as life-saving colic surgery or repair of long bone fractures. Referrals are not necessary for us to evaluate your horse, but we do serve as a referral center for veterinarians in Colorado and the surrounding states for more complex medical, surgical, and lameness problems in horses. We have approximately 30-35 faculty and staff that work in the equine hospital.

The Facility

  • State of the art equipment is available to perform gastroscopy, endoscopy, arthroscopy, laparoscopy, laser surgery, fracture repair, and essentially any type of minor or complicated surgery. Advanced imaging equipment includes computer enhanced radiography, ultrasound, scintigraphy, CT scan, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
  • More than 50 stalls including Adult ICU stalls and mare-foal NICU stalls equipped with sling capabilities and the latest technology and monitoring equipment, including access to 24-hour clinical pathology and chemistry blood analysis, specialized fluid delivery devices, and ventilator capabilities for neonates. Individual video monitoring of colic aisle and isolation stalls is also available via the Internet.
  • Three surgery suites outfitted with the latest tools to perform essentially any type of minor or complicated surgery.
  • Board-certified anesthesiologists assist surgery teams and oversee care during surgical procedures.
  • Multiple induction and recovery stalls including a padded neurology stall for management of horses waking from surgery.
  • A separate isolation facility for treating horses with infectious/contagious diseases, so that we can provide the best care and keep other patients safe.
  • A covered lameness examination area, an exercise arena, and a high-speed treadmill for evaluating lameness and performance problems.

The Veterinary Medical Team

Our staff is made up of over 30 dedicated professionals specializing in performance issues, lameness, surgery, internal medicine, critical care, reproduction and other specialty services such as dermatology, oncology, ophthalmology and complementary medicine. This includes:

Faculty Clinicians: Board-certified veterinarians with advanced expertise in lameness, surgery, internal medicine, critical care, reproduction, and other specialty services. Your faculty clinician will serve as the primary veterinary medical provider.

Veterinary Residents: Experienced veterinarians who have received their D.V.M. degrees and gone on to complete a qualified internship. As residents, they will spend three years training to be specialists.

Nurses/Technicians: Our equine nurses are specialty trained and provide high quality continuous care for patients as well as assist senior veterinary students in the hospital.

Senior Veterinary Students: Students are finishing their fourth and final year of veterinary school. They provide care for your horse along with other team members.

Your regular/primary care veterinarian: Although a referral is not necessary for us to treat your horse, we do serve as a referral center for veterinarians around the region. We are proud to partner with both you and your local veterinarian or simply serve you and your horse as your primary care provider.
