The Equine Medicine Service provides diagnostic and therapeutic expertise for the care of equine medicine cases. Diagnostic capabilities with regards to medicine include the capability to perform in-depth examinations including imaging of the abdomen and thorax through, radiology, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine. Other diagnostic capabilities include endoscopy of the upper airway and gastrointestinal tract. The service is staffed by faculty who are board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, resident veterinarians in training for board certification, veterinary students, and a group of highly skilled technicians.

The equine medicine members are known for their expertise in diagnosis and treatment as well as prevention of equine infectious diseases. Other areas of expertise include fluid and antimicrobial therapy, monitoring and intervention in critically ill neonates. We have a dedicated areas within the hospital for the care of animals with infectious diseases so that we can provide them the care they need without risking the welfare of the remainder of the hospital patients. Our faculty are leaders in the area of infection control within veterinary hospital medicine. The group receives scheduled outpatients as well as medical emergencies during regular hours. After hours a skilled group of Emergency and Critical Care faculty and residents receive emergencies. Our hospitalized patients are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by a combination of veterinary students, skilled technicians, residents, and faculty.
